Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin Seeks Help for Poseidon Hash Function
Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum, is looking for help.He wants researchers to join the Poseidon cryptographic analysis program. This move could improve Ethereum’s zk-proof capabilities.
Buterin shared this on X. He believes switching to the Poseidon hash function could make zk-provers work better. These tools verify transactions privately. To make this decision, Ethereum needs more info on Poseidon’s security. They’ve extended the request deadline to March 15.
poseidon is newer than hash functions like SHA-256 and Keccak. These older functions have been tested for decades. However, they aren’t designed for zero-knowledge proofs. Poseidon is. It’s already used in some Ethereum layer-2 systems and other blockchain projects.
Ethereum’s interest in poseidon is part of its broader efforts to improve the network. The upcoming Pectra upgrade on April 8 aims to boost scalability, account abstraction,layer-2 efficiency, and validator rewards. This follows the Dencun hard fork in March 2024, which cut layer-2 transaction fees.
buterin encourages researchers to join the Poseidon cryptanalysis program. Their insights could shape Ethereum’s future.
