Clearstream to Launch Crypto Services for Institutional Clients
Clearstream, a part of Deutsche Börse Group, is set to offer Bitcoin adn Ethereum custody and settlement services to its 2,500 institutional clients from April. this move aims to cater to teh growing demand for crypto services among financial institutions.
Initially, Clearstream will support Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).The company plans to expand into other cryptocurrencies and services like staking, lending, and brokerage in the future. Clients can access these services through their accounts with Clearstream Banking SA. Crypto Finance, a subsidiary of Clearstream, will act as a sub-custodian to facilitate the offering.
jens Hachmeister, head of issuer services at Clearstream, said the company aims to become a “one-stop shop” for custody, brokerage, and settlement services. This could eventually include stablecoins and tokenized securities.
Stijn Vander Straeten, CEO of Crypto Finance, noted a high demand for crypto services from international banking clients.He added that firms frequently enough spend up to €5 million to develop in-house crypto capabilities.
This development aligns with the expansion of major financial institutions into the crypto space, supported by regulations like the EU’s MiCA framework.For example, BBVA, the second-largest Spanish financial institution, is also launching a crypto trading service in Spain. Customers will be able to manage Bitcoin and Ethereum alongside their regular banking activities using BBVA’s own custody platform.
