Poste Italiane May Play Key Role in Digital Euro launch
Poste italiane could be a vital partner in bringing the digital euro too Italy. This is according to Piero Cipollone,a European Central Bank (ECB) executive board member. He shared this idea at an ASviS event.
Cipollone believes Poste Italiane’s extensive client base makes it well-suited to support the “last mile” of the digital euro’s rollout.the “last mile” is the final step that puts the digital currency directly into people’s hands. The ECB is still preparing for the launch but will need reliable partners for this crucial phase.
Poste Italiane, traditionally known for mail delivery, also offers banking services. Cipollone thinks the company can easily help introduce the digital euro to millions of Italians. This new project would build on its existing financial services, making it a natural fit.
The digital euro is becoming necessary in today’s digital age. More people are using digital payments, and cash usage is declining. cipollone stresses that the digital euro would not replace physical cash but complement it. It offers a state-backed option to private digital payment systems.
According to Cipollone, if everything goes well, the first digital euro transactions could occur by mid-2028. This includes overcoming political hurdles. The ECB aims to strike a balance between customary money and the digital future.
