Australian Authorities Tackle Crypto Scam targeting Binance Users
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have launched an inquiry into a significant crypto scam. Fraudsters pretended to be from Binance, deceiving local users. The AFP,National Anti-Scam Centre, and Binance Australia jointly revealed this through operation Firestorm,a global effort against digital fraud.
Over 130 people may have fallen victim to this scheme.Scammers contacted users, pretending to be Binance representatives. They sent fake warnings about account breaches, using encrypted messaging and SMS.
Victims received spoofed messages in their Binance chat threads, making them seem real. Scammers provided fake verification codes and a support number.Once contacted, victims were pressured to move their crypto to a ātrust wallet,ā controlled by the fraudsters. By the time they realized, the funds were transferred through various wallets, making recovery difficult.
AFP Commander Graeme Marshall advised victims to report incidents to their bank, crypto exchange, and the police via ReportCyber.
Binance, a major crypto platform, is often targeted by scammers. Cyprus police warned of a similar scam in February 2025. Binance is reportedly developing a new security feature to help users detect SMS phishing scams, but details are limited.
