PSG Becomes First Sports Team to Hold Bitcoin as Treasury Asset
Paris saint-Germain, a top European football club, has made history by adding Bitcoin to its balance sheet. This groundbreaking move was announced at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas. Par Helgosson, head of PSG Labs, confirmed that the club converted part of its fiat reserves into Bitcoin in 2024.
PSG is the first professional sports team to adopt Bitcoin as a treasury asset. Most clubs with crypto exposure use fan tokens,NFTs,or sponsorships. PSG, though, is taking a unique approach by directly investing in the digital asset.
Helgosson stated, “We allocated bitcoin from our fiat reserves. It’s still on our books. We’re investing in the ecosystem, not just sponsoring crypto.” This strategy aligns with PSG’s global fanbase, where 80% are under 34 and already engaged in digital culture.
The market reacted positively.PSG’s Fan Token, launched in 2018 via Socios, spiked to $2.75 before settling at $2.42. The club also operates a validator on the Chiliz blockchain, using staking rewards for token buybacks.
PSG’s move comes as Bitcoin hits an all-time high of $111,800. Other major institutions, like GameStop, have also invested in BTC, boosting its appeal as a store of value.
