China May Offer fentanyl Help to Restart U.S. Trade Talks
The Wall Street Journal reports that China might offer assistance in combating the fentanyl crisis in North America as a way to restart trade negotiations with the U.S. Fentanyl overdoses claim tens of thousands of lives annually in the U.S. adn Canada. China plays a significant role in this crisis.
According to unnamed sources, China could propose cooperation on the fentanyl issue to ease tensions and foster dialog with the Trump governance. Chinese chemical companies reportedly export fentanyl precursors and provide advice to Americans on online forums.
China’s involvement in the fentanyl trade is crucial. The drug’s potency is far greater than heroin or morphine. In 2022, nearly 80,000 people in the U.S. died from synthetic opioid overdoses, mostly fentanyl. Canada, with a smaller population, saw around 6,000 deaths in 2023.
