spar Embraces Bitcoin in Swiss Store
Spar, a global grocery chain, has started accepting Bitcoin at a store in Zug, Switzerland. This move could lead to wider crypto adoption across its retail network.
DFX Swiss, a company offering crypto-to-cash solutions, announced teh change on April 17. The Spar location in Zug is now live on BTC Map, a platform tracking businesses that accept Bitcoin.DFX Swiss used a new tool called OpenCryptoPay to enable this payment system.
Customers can pay with Bitcoin via the Lightning Network by scanning a QR code at checkout. Rahim Taghizadegan, director of the Bitcoin Association Switzerland, shared a video showing how easy it is indeed to pay with BTC at Spar. if prosperous, Spar might expand Bitcoin payments across switzerland or globally. Spar has over 13,900 stores in 48 countries, serving 14.7 million daily shoppers. This makes Spar one of the first Swiss supermarkets to accept BTC directly at checkout.
Other chains have also adopted Bitcoin payments. In the Netherlands, a Spar store in Arnhem began accepting BTC in 2014. In April 2023, South Africa’s Pick n Pay rolled out BTC payments across all 1,600+ stores. Shoppers there spend over $50K in BTC monthly.
Major U.S.chains like Whole Foods and Starbucks have experimented with crypto payments. They use third-party apps like Spedn, which convert crypto to fiat at checkout.
Accepting BTC at its stores, Spar joins other retailers experimenting with crypto payments. This is a big step for crypto adoption, given Spar’s massive footprint.
