Metaplanet, a Japanese investment firm, has added 269.43 Bitcoin to its treasury. The acquisition, announced on February 17, was made at an average price of $95,000 per Bitcoin, totaling $25.6 million.
This move increases Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings to 2,031.41 BTC.The firm’s average purchase price now stands at $78,000 per BTC, with a total investment of $159 million. Metaplanet uses BTC Yield to gauge the value of its Bitcoin relative to its shares. In Q1 2025, the BTC Yield was 15.3%, up from 309.8% in late 2024.
Since mid-2024, Metaplanet has been aggressively buying Bitcoin. It started with 141 BTC and now holds over 1,760 BTC, making it a top institutional Bitcoin holder in Japan.
Metaplanet’s strategy mirrors that of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), a U.S.firm known for its corporate Bitcoin accumulation. As of February 17, strategy has over $14.85 billion in unrealized profits from its BTC holdings.
However, Strategy reported a $670.8 million loss in Q4 2024, compared to a $89.1 million profit in the same period the previous year. The loss was due to a $1.01 billion impairment charge on its Bitcoin holdings.
Despite these setbacks, Strategy remains the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, betting on long-term growth.Metaplanet plans to increase its Bitcoin holdings to 10,000 in 2025, despite Japan’s strict crypto regulations.
